Form, writes Nicolas Bourriaud, is ‘structural unity imitating a world.’ I have responded to this idea with “Three Spaces in Mid-Air”, which is designed as a continuous work in three discrete sections. Each explores the idea of spectral space through interaction and coalescence of stratified sound — I conceived these as formations of three-dimensional sonic objects suspended before the listener as plausibly coherent ‘worlds.’ The work’s three sections also address the compression of form, each aiming to embody the atmosphere of a self-contained micro-narrative — evoking implications of direction, tension and release while balancing states of stasis and motion.

“Three Spaces in Mid-Air” was realized in 2017 in the Music, Technology and Innovation Research Laboratory at De Montfort University (Leicester, UK), and premiered on June 21, 2017, at the Project(ion) Room in Brussels (Belgium). “Three Spaces in Mid-Air” was awarded 2nd Prize in the 10th Destellos Electroacoustic Composition Competition (Mar del Plata, Argentina, 2017), and 1st Prize at the 6th Klang! International Electroacoustic Composition Competition (Montpellier, France, 2019).

La forme, écrit Nicolas Bourriaud, est une «unité structurelle imitant un monde». «Three Spaces in Mid-Air» est ma réponse à cette idée. L’œuvre est conçue comme un tout, sans interruption, mais en trois parties distinctes. Chacune utilise l’interaction et la coalescence de sons stratifiés pour explorer l’idée d’un espace spectral. Ces espaces, je les conçois comme des formations d’objets sonores tridimensionnels en suspension devant l’auditeur, des «mondes» plausiblement cohérents. En outre, les trois parties de l’œuvre se penchent sur la compression de la forme, chacune cherchant à incarner l’atmosphère d’un microrécit autonome, suggérant direction, tension, détente, tout en équilibrant états de stase et de mouvement.

«Three Spaces in Mid-Air» [Trois espaces en suspension] a été réalisée en 2017 au Music, Technology and Innovation Research Laboratory de la De Montfort University (Leicester, RU) et a été créée le 21 juin 2017 à la Project(ion) Room à Bruxelles (Belgique). «Three Spaces in Mid-Air» a obtenu le 2e prix au 10e Concours de composition électroacoustique Destellos (Mar del Plata, Argentine, 2017) et le 1er prix au 6e Concours international de composition électroacoustique Klang! (Montpellier, France, 2019).
