It is by the persevering repetition of the warm-up, an exhaustive set of studies and musical exercises, that instrumentalists—like craftspeople — forge, sculpt and refine their technique and sound. In this piece, a denatured, virtualized and recomposed flute enters the electroacoustic medium through different exercise circuits, where material and gesture are organized into a dynamic of restarts.

Through local repetitions (loops) and global repetitions (anticipated or projected elements throughout the piece), “𝄆 Extensio:Warm:Up 𝄇” offers a path with multiple interior echoes. The electroacoustic part, essentially synthesized, wraps the flute in a more orchestral, instrumental approach. The sections of the work proceed in contrasting ways, allowing for moments of high density to counterbalance moments of almost motionless sound textures. In spite of these organizational, temporal and material foundations, the hope is that the technicality of the warm-up will be transcended by the work’s poetics. The impression of large spaces, saturation for its bewitching (and not discouraging) quality, the need for change, the desire to progress (extensio) and to metamorphose in spite of the repetition (warm-up) day after day, the alloying and meeting of contrasting universes, a fallow sound that aspires to be fertile and transformed

“𝄆 Extensio:Warm:Up 𝄇” was realized in 2015-17 at the composer’s studio in MontrĂ©al (QuĂ©bec) and was premiered on May 4, 2017 during the concert “Murmurations sur la ville” presented by Erreur de type 27 (E27) at the MusĂ©e national des beaux-arts du QuĂ©bec, in QuĂ©bec. It was commissioned by E27 with support from the Canada Council for the Arts (CCA).

C’est par la persĂ©vĂ©rante rĂ©pĂ©tition de son warm-up, assemblage bouclĂ© d’études et d’exercices musicaux, que l’instrumentiste — tel l’artisan — forge, sculpte et affine sa technique et sa sonoritĂ©. Dans cette piĂšce, une flĂ»te dĂ©naturĂ©e, virtualisĂ©e, recomposĂ©e, s’insĂšre au mĂ©dium Ă©lectroacoustique Ă  travers diffĂ©rents cycles d’exercices, oĂč la matiĂšre et le geste s’organisent en une dynamique de relances et de recommencements.

Â«đ„† Extensio:Warm:Up đ„‡Â», par le biais de rĂ©pĂ©titions locales (boucles) et globales (Ă©lĂ©ments anticipĂ©s ou projetĂ©s Ă  diffĂ©rents endroits Ă  travers l’Ɠuvre) propose un parcours aux multiples Ă©chos intĂ©rieurs. La partie Ă©lectroacoustique essentiellement rĂ©alisĂ©e par synthĂšse englobe ici la flĂ»te dans une approche davantage orchestrale et instrumentale. Les sections de l’Ɠuvre se succĂšdent par contraste, laissant apparaĂźtre des moments de haute densitĂ©, contrebalancĂ©s par des textures sonores presque immobiles. MalgrĂ© ces prĂ©misses organisationnelles, temporelles et matĂ©riologiques, nous espĂ©rons qu’à l’audition, la technicitĂ© du warm-up sera transcendĂ©e par la poĂ©tique de l’Ɠuvre. Proposition de grands espaces, envoĂ»tement de la saturation (et non dĂ©couragement par celle-ci), dĂ©sirs de changements, dĂ©sirs de progressions (extensio) et de mĂ©tamorphoses malgrĂ© la rĂ©pĂ©tition (warm-up) des jours, rencontres et alliages d’univers contrastants, jachĂšre sonore qui aspire Ă  la transformation
