Andrew Yencken, “Balanço” (1996)

“Balanço” means “swaying” or “balance sheet” in Portuguese. Inspired by early Hermeto Pascoal records my aim was to make an Escher-like construction with moving parts, a kinetic sculpture to be played by a Czech film crew and three Tasmanian musicians. Meanwhile, Luigi Russolo and Jacques Tati were preparing to roll sound for take two… Edited on a Fairlight MFXII at Audio Loc Sound Design and Albert’s Studios (Sydney, Australia) in October, 1996. Thanks to Michael Fortescue, double bass; Gary Greenwood, leather instruments; and Tim Gleeson, metal percussion.

«Balanço» veut dire «oscillant» ou «bilan» en portugais. Inspiré par les premiers enregistrements de Hermeto Pascoal, mon but était de réaliser une construction à la Escher, avec des parties mobiles, une sculpture cinétique pour être jouée par une équipe de tournage tchèque et trois musiciens tasmans. Entre-temps, Luigi Russolo et Jacques Tati se préparaient à enregistrer une deuxième prise… Produit à l’aide d’un Fairlight MFXII aux studios Audio Loc Sound Design et Albert’s Studio (Sydney, Australie) en octobre 1996. Merci à Michael Fortescue, contrebasse; Gary Greenwood, instruments en cuir; et Tim Gleeson, percussion métallique.
