The composition of “Arioso” grew from a soundscape experience on a humid September night in Tappan Square in Oberlin (Ohio, USA), where a chorus of crickets and the constant electronic beep of pedestrian crossing signals formed a texture of cyclically interlocking pitch and throbbing granular noise. My field recording of this unlikely duet between the purity of an artificial pulsing tone and the spatially rich stridulation of insects underpins the structure of the piece. A flock of jackdaws circling in flight near my home just after dawn provides another window on the world of natural sound, supporting the work’s emphatic rhythmic shapes. While the form might be loosely thought of as reflecting the traditional recitative-like ‘arioso,’ the title (“Arioso” = ‘airy’) is also intended to be more deeply indicative of the atmosphere of sensual mystery I found with the air set in vibrant motion that night in Oberlin.

“Arioso” was realized in 2021 in the Music, Technology and Innovation Research Laboratory at De Montfort University (Leicester, UK), and was premiered on June 13, 2021 by Thomas Gorbach during the concert “Neue Musik in St Ruprecht – Simplicity” at Ruprechtskirche in Vienna (Austria). “Arioso” was awarded both the 2nd Prize ex æquo and the 1st Audience Prize ex æquo in the 14th Destellos Electroacoustic Composition Competition (Mar del Plata, Argentina, 2022).

La composition d’«Arioso» découle d’un paysage sonore que j’ai vécu, une nuit humide de septembre, au Tappan Square d’Oberlin (Ohio, ÉU): un chœur de grillons et le bip électronique constant du feu d’une traverse piétonnière formaient une texture de tonalités imbriquées de manière cyclique à des battements de bruit granulaire. L’enregistrement de ce duo improbable entre la pureté d’une pulsation sonore artificielle et les riches stridulations des insectes sous-tend la structure de la pièce. Un groupe de choucas des tours volant en cercle près de chez moi, peu après l’aube, propose une autre fenêtre sur le monde sonore naturel et vient soutenir les figures rythmiques empathiques de l’œuvre. Si on peut envisager la forme de cette dernière comme reprenant le côté récitatif de l’arioso traditionnel, ce titre («Arioso» = aérien) traduit aussi l’atmosphère qui régnait ce soir-là, à Oberlin: mystérieuse, sensuelle, vibrante de mouvement.

«Arioso» a été réalisée en 2021 au Music, Technology and Innovation Research Laboratory de la De Montfort University (Leicester, RU) et a été créée le 13 juin 2021 par Thomas Gorbach pendant le concert «Neue Musik in St Ruprecht – Simplicity» présenté à la Ruprechtskirche de Vienne (Autriche). «Arioso» a remporté le 2e prix (ex æquo) et le 1er prix du public (ex æquo) au 14e Concours de composition électroacoustique Destellos (Mar del Plata, Argentine, 2022).
