A former student of Jonty Harrison and Denis Smalley — two important figures of the British electroacoustics school — Natasha Barrett integrates the approach of these two composers into a proposition which recalls both sound ecology and properly abstract composition. “Isostasie” is full of these poetic, disconcerting environments, impressionistic pictures of various formats, evocative of her country of adoption, Norway. In this CD, one will encounter various meteorological happenings, the midnight sun, “Red Snow” (a phenomenon due to the growth of algae or diatoms), as well as an ode to the forest, “Viva la Selva!”. Plenty of illustrations and impressions of the Norwegian landscape, postfaced with an «exploration of spatial musical structure» (“The Utility of Space”), all fabricated with utmost delicacy by a young composer with an attuned ear, of whom this is the third album already (following two self-produced CDs, “Rocks & Wraiths” and “Chillies & Shells”.) Ancienne étudiante de Jonty Harrison et Denis Smalley (que ça!) Natasha Barrett intègre l’approche sonore de ces deux compositeurs, tous deux chefs de file de l’école électroacoustique britannique, dans une proposition qui s’apparente autant à l’écologie sonore qu’à la composition proprement abstraite. «Isostasie» est peuplé de ces environnements déconcertants et poétiques, tableaux impressionnistes de petit et grand formats qui évoquent la Norvège qu’elle a pris comme terre d’accueil en 1998. On retrouve dans ce disque phénomènes météorologiques divers, soleil de minuit, neige rouge (phénomène dû aux algues et diatomées peuplant les environs), ainsi qu’un ode à la forêt, «Viva la Selva!». Autant d’illustrations et d’impressions de l’environnement norvégien, ajoutées d’une «exploration de la structure musico-spatiale» («The Utility of Space»), toutes tissées avec délicatesse par une jeune compositrice à l’oreille affinée, et dont c’est déjà le troisième album (ses deux premiers CDs, «Rocks & Wraiths» et «Chillies & Shells» sont autoproduits.)
