As the Roman god of time (cyclic and evolving) who possessed a double nature, Janus is perhaps best known for his perceived capacity to see into the future and the past and preside over sets of opposite events such as beginnings and endings, be they cosmic, agrarian, societal or personal. However, Janus had other functions for he was also known as the Roman god of change and transition and he symbolized progress from one state to another, for example young people’s development into adulthood. Further, he represented the middle ground between such opposite conditions as barbarism and civilization.

While inexhaustive, it is this set of qualities, replete with different proportions, that renders Janus as an apt name for a trilogy of acousmatic works that is inspired by the book “Owning Your Own Shadow – Understanding the Dark Side of the Psyche” by Jungian analyst and author, Robert A Johnson. The trilogy explores through sound the creation and evolution of psychological opposites and the quest for spiritual wholeness on a human scale, at times relating such activity to the environment, the context for human life.

En tant dieu romain du temps (cyclique et évolutif) possédant une nature double, Janus est peut-être mieux connu pour sa capacité à lire dans le futur et le passé, et à présider aux phénomènes opposés, comme début et fin, qu’ils soient cosmiques, agraires, sociétaux ou personnels. Mais Janus avait d’autres fonctions, et il était aussi connu comme le dieu romain du changement et de la transition, et il symbolisait le devenir d’un état à un autre, par exemple le passage de la jeunesse vers le stade adulte. De plus, il représentait la phase intermédiaire entre des opposés tels que barbarie et civilisation.

Ce sont ces qualités – la liste n’est guère exhaustive – se manifestant dans des proportions diverses, qui rendent le nom de Janus apte à représenter une trilogie d’oeuvres acousmatiques inspirée de l’ouvrage de l’analyste Jungien et écrivain Robert A Johnson, «Owning Your Own Shadow – Understanding the Dark Side of the Psyche» (Posséder sa propre ombre – Comprendre la face sombre du psychisme). La trilogie explore par le son la création et l’évolution d’opposés psychologiques et la quête de l’intégrité spirituelle à l’échelle humaine, en reliant parfois cette activité à l’environnement, le contexte de toute vie humaine.
